School Sport and Action Plan

More support for schools necessary following School Action Plan update

The activities sector has gathered to support the government’s continued support for the PE Premium for the next two academic years. The publication by the HM Government further underpins research from the University of Edinburgh’s Development Physical Education Group (DPEG), which outlines PE as a lifelong necessity.

The publication of the School Sport and Action Plan includes a minimum of 2 hours of timetabled PE that meets national curriculum goals. It also aims to offer greater access to extracurricular activity, including increased access for girls, disadvantaged people, and young people with SEND needs.

The commitment to the PE Premium and the importance of ensuring the legacy of greater sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games, means providing positive PE experiences for pupils is integral. Schools need professional coaching support and administrative help to fulfil academic and physical activity goals for the national curriculum.

For children and young people, putting PE at the centre of school life is essential. As a pathway to better mental health and a lifelong love of physical activity and sport, skilled professionals at the helm of PE teaching need to be the number one priority for every school.
